When you meet OT at the Café, you’re meeting a man of many talents—a photographer, a phone repair specialist, and a friend to everyone he encounters. OT moved to the U.S. as a student to build a life centered on creativity and hard work. But like many of us, OT’s path hasn’t been a straight line.
The Reality of the Struggle
The path of recovery is a journey of peaks and valleys. For OT, a period of isolation and the pressure of maintaining a business led to a struggle with alcohol. This difficult chapter eventually led to a stint with incarceration and periods of homelessness.
Recently, OT faced a major setback. While participating in a co-parenting capacity with his daughter, he ran into a legal complication regarding a restraining order. This led to a short bout of incarceration which resulted in the loss of his housing and his bike. The weight of this personal setback resulted in a one-night relapse immediately following his release.

The Power of “Proactive” Recovery
In the world of recovery, a “slip” can often become a “slide,” but OT chose a different ending to this chapter. Instead of letting one night define him, he recognized the setback and immediately returned to his community at the Café to “lock in” his support system.
“I’m not just sitting, lounging around… I’m actually proactive. There’s some fulfillment that comes out of it, and that’s encouraging by itself.”
– OT
OT describes the Café as a place where he can be “proactive.” For him, healing isn’t about sitting on the sidelines; it’s about contributing.
“I’m not just sitting, lounging around… I’m actually proactive. There’s some fulfillment that comes out of it, and that’s encouraging by itself.”
Looking Forward
OT’s resilience is paying off. He has successfully completed our Kitchen Program and is now setting his sights on our Peer Coaching training. He wants to take the lessons he’s learned through his successes and his setbacks and use them to help others navigate their own journeys.
OT is a testament to the fact that while we may face moments of struggle, those moments are just pages in the book—they aren’t the end of the story. We add to the story every day. We are proud of OT’s “proactive” spirit and what he adds to our community every day.
